Sugar Dating Safety: Scams to Avoid & How to Protect Yourself
Sugar dating is as safe as the precautions you take. The platform can verify profiles and ban scammers, but the patterns below catch newcomers every single day - learn them once and they never work on you again.
The overpayment scam
He "sends" $2,000, shows you a fake confirmation screenshot, then says he overpaid and asks you to refund $500. The original payment never existed; your refund is real money gone. Rule: money is only real once it is spendable in your account - screenshots prove nothing, and pending checks bounce after you withdraw.
The fee-to-receive scam
Any "sugar daddy" who needs you to pay something to receive his money - an "activation fee", a gift card to "verify you're real", crypto to "open the transfer channel" - is a thief. Real generosity never costs the receiver anything. This is the single most common scam in sugar dating, and it always starts with a too-good offer from a brand-new profile.
Account and identity traps
Never share bank logins ("I'll just deposit directly"), never accept cards or checks in your name, never receive-and-forward money for anyone (that is money laundering - the crime becomes yours), and keep documents private. For findoms: the same applies in reverse - "paypigs" who overpay and request partial refunds are running the same script. More in our paypig screening guide.
First-meeting rules
Public place, daytime or early evening, your own transport both ways, a friend who knows where you are and gets a check-in time. Video chat before meeting - it kills 90% of catfish. Stay sober enough to drive even if you are not driving. None of this is paranoia; it is what experienced sugar babies do on date fifty, not just date one.
Use the platform's protections
On HePays, prefer members with ID and photo verification badges, keep early conversations on-platform (off-platform chat is where scams move first), and report suspicious profiles - reports get human review and bans feed our blocklists. See the full HePays safety center for the complete checklist.
Scams aside, remember: thousands of real arrangements start every month. Be careful, not fearful - here is how to find the real ones.
